Green Juice, and a Super Healthy and Tasty Green Juice Recipe
| November 30, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Nutrition, Recipes |
Not all juices are equal. Juice available in the grocery store simply is unhealthy. It is full of sugar, void of nutrients except for what has been artificially added back in, full of preservatives, often made from concentrate, etc. Even the juices and smoothies marketed as being healthy (e.g. Odwalla, Naked, V8) are not. When we health conscious folks talk about juice, we mean the stuff that has come straight out of a juicer on the premise, and that we can consume immediately. Why? Because as soon as the fruits and vegetables go through the juicer, they are stripped of… more
Why Fiber Is So Important, and How to Increase Your Intake
| November 28, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Nutrition |
Fiber is indigestible by the body; its main purpose is elimination. Without adequate fiber, complete elimination is nearly impossible (unless you are constantly doing enemas and colonics). The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends that people eat 30 grams of fiber per day, yet the average American eats only 10 – 15 grams of fiber per day. Fiber is tremendously important, so much so that nearly everyone in holistic healthcare as well as health-conscious vegetarians and vegans believe the ADA’s recommendation is way too low and that everyone should eat at least 40 grams per day. Why is it so important that we consume… more
The Benefits of Blending
| November 28, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Healing, Nutrition |
Blending food effectively breaks it down, enabling our bodies to assimilate very easily the nutrients contained within. The structured water in the fruits/vegetables and the enzymes are released during the blending process and, as a result, are much more easily digested and absorbed. By blending, you spare your gastrointestinal tract the hard work required for digesting, and the energy that would have been used in that process can instead be used for other things, such as healing and rejuvenating your body. For this reason, consuming blended food is crucial for people who are very sick and whose immune systems desperately… more
Wheat Causes Inflammation–Go Gluten-Free
| November 24, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Health Tip, Nutrition |
Dr. William Davis, a Wisconsin-based cardiologist, has helped thousands of patients by doing one, simple thing: having them remove all wheat from their diets. He says the results are astounding, not only with the heart and circulatory problems, but also with a variety of other ailments like skin rashes, arthritis, insomnia, diabetes, dementia, brain damage, and myriad others. Holistic health practitioners have been saying this for a long time, and now an increasing number of medical doctors are saying the same because they notice that more and more people have developed wheat allergies or sensitivities. Most people are allergic, to… more
Pineapple-Kale-Spinach Green Smoothie, and a Bit about Bromelain
| November 23, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Nutrition, Recipes |
This smoothie is chock full of nutrition and enzymes and is very easy to make. Kale is so incredibly nutritious, but can be very bitter when eaten raw, but the pineapple masks any bitter flavor and adds a tangy sweetness, and the spinach neutralizes everything and makes it all come together nicely. I really recommend you give this a try because it is a nutritional superstar and is such a wonderful way to start the day. Pineapple also contains a mixture of enzymes called bromelain that block the production of kinins that form when there is inflammation, so eating pineapple… more
The Importance of Soaking Nuts Before Consumption
| November 22, 2011 | Posted by Christina under Health Tip, Nutrition |
Nuts and seeds remain dormant until they are in an optimal environment to start the growing and sprouting process, the point at which they become a living, nutritionally optimal food. In order to remain dormant, nuts and seeds contain an inhibitor enzyme on their outside surface to protect them from outside contaminants. Once we soak nuts and seeds, the germination process begins, during which the readily available amounts of enzymes, proteins, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals multiplies and they release their inhibitor enzymes. Because the inhibitor enzymes make it very hard for us to digest them and we therefore are not… more
